Stories for exploring other worlds

What is not written does not exist

A new section opens part 0, and it states the law the rest of the book had been obeying in silence: you may prepare, but only writing creates.

An open notebook on two blank dotted pages, a pen laid across the right-hand page.

A new section opens part 0. It states the one law the book had been obeying everywhere without ever saying it once: you may prepare, but only writing creates. No mechanic moved, and nothing you have played is invalidated. What changes is that the book now tells you why it works.

I play this game. Not to write it, to play it, and a fortnight ago I sat down to a session that would not start.

Nothing was wrong with the rules. I simply had a vague idea of what was coming: the man behind the counter was hiding something, the alley led somewhere, the evening would end badly. None of it was written. All of it was in the way. Every card I drew landed late on something I already knew, and my hand dragged across the page.

The book had a page for exactly this. Part 12 calls it the future that never happened, and it is a good page: it describes the symptom, it explains that a list is not the Standing pagethe page that keeps what is pending: living actors, waits, stakes, desires under way, fate’s marks. There is only one, and it replaces the previous one.part 8, it warns you that skipping ahead will not save you. Then it told me to drive the Game Master out of myself.

I could not. Nobody can. You cannot ask someone to stop thinking between two sessions, and a rule that demands it is a rule that gets quietly ignored.

So I turned it over, and it changed sides.

You will prepare in spite of yourself. Between sessions an idea takes shape, and nothing asks you to chase it away: it is half the pleasure, and it would come anyway. Whether you thought it is not the question. What it is worth is.

As long as a thing is not on the notebook, it is not in the world. It is one possible among others, and the card that falls tonight has every right to deny it. Your preparation is a draft that binds nothing, and it stays a draft until your hand writes it down.

That is the whole of it, and it fits on one line. What is not written does not exist.

A world you discover instead of unrolling.

You are not visiting a Backdropwhat you come across and forget: pure color, nothing to note. A Backdrop becomes an actor the day you notice that it wants something.part 7 you built in advance. You see through your character's eyes, at the same moment he does, and what he finds still surprises you. That is the part I had lost that evening, and losing it is what made the session feel like homework.

A game that stops surprising its author stops being a game. The engine is only worth what it can still tell you.

Here is what makes this more than one new section, and the reason I wanted to write about it rather than just ship it.

Once the sentence exists, four rules that looked unrelated turn out to be the same rule, seen from four sides.

The notebook does not archive, it begets, which the introduction has said since the first version. The standing page is rewritten from scratch and what you do not copy over is dead. At the Opening (the)the gesture that begins every scene: three cards, you keep one, you give up the other two. The only draw where choosing costs, and the only door of fate.part 3 you renounce two cards and they are gone for good, with nothing to note and nothing to recover. And part 10 forbids building the world outside play, which had always read as a rather severe piece of advice.

Not four decisions. One law, applied four times. The book had been enforcing it everywhere and stating it nowhere, which is precisely why it read as a set of arbitrary severities instead of a single idea. It reads differently now, and I did not have to change a single one of those four rules to get there.

One thing needed settling, because the new law could easily be read as an order to leave everything to chance.

It is not. The line does not run between chance and decision. It runs between now and in advance.

Deciding inside the Scenethe unit of play: you open it, you play it, you close it.part 3 is allowed, and part 12 still tells you to decide and move on when the draw would only slow you down. What costs you is deciding for a scene you have not played yet. The fault was never choosing. The fault is choosing on behalf of a moment that has not happened.

The old page keeps what only it can say: the symptom, the difference between a list and the standing page, and why skipping ahead deposits you further along the same list.

Its ending is gone. Drive them out has become let them speak, because nothing the Game Master in you announces is written, so nothing he announces has taken place. You do not have to win that argument. You only have to know that he has no authority over a page you have not filled in.

The book also lost a motto in the process. Nothing is written, so nothing is charted said the same thing one chapter too late, and two twin sentences make neither of them memorable. One law, stated once, at the front.

Nothing, mechanically. No procedure moved, no card behaves differently, nothing in your notebook is invalidated, and there is nothing to re-learn.

What you get is a sentence to hold on to on the evening when the session will not start. If it feels like you are running late on your own story, you probably are, and the fix is not to write faster. It is to notice that the thing you are running late on was never written, and therefore never happened.

Both editions were written in the same pass. Part 0 and part 12 are translated and sealed on both sides, the skeletons are compared automatically, and the check passes: same plates, same scenes, same cards on the Table (the)the surface in front of you: the cards drawn stay in view on it for the length of the scene.parts 2, 7, counted in French and in English.

The English rendering of the motto is in the glossary, still marked as a proposal rather than frozen. Two turns were rejected on the way: nothing exists until it is written, which reverses the sentence and loses the shape of a law, and the unwritten does not exist, which sounds like a proverb instead of a rule.

The PDFs on itch.io are already the new ones.

The whole book is free to read online here, in both editions.

Ashcan edition: the book is complete and playable; it is not finished. Tell me what breaks.
